Veteran Support

I completely support our military veterans and active members of the U.S. armed services. If it were not for our veterans, along with the men and women in active service, we would NOT have the freedoms that we enjoy today.

I have the honor of being from a family who has had numerous family members serve in the U.S. military.  I also have veteran descendants dating back to the Civil War.

My father is a USMC Veteran, and my “new” nephew is currently serving in the USMC. I also have numerous friends who are veterans and I understand the challenges and sacrifices of serving in the U.S. armed services.

A few weeks ago, I had the honor of meeting the last surviving USMC WWII Medal of Honor recipient, Hershel “Woody” Williams. Although I have shaken the hands of two U.S. Presidents, Ronald Reagan and George W. Bush, those handshakes pale in comparison to being in the presence of this true American legend! His story of bravery and duty is awe-inspiring and it should be required reading in all U.S. High Schools.

Support for Labor and Trade Unions

As an engineer, I have had the privilege of working with folks from several different trade unions. My mother is a retired Teamster, and my sister is Vice-President of the local Mail Carrier’s union. I have several ancestors who worked locally and were union members. I understand the importance of arbitration, collective bargaining, and the protections that unions provide the workers they represent.

All too often, I hear that Republican ideals and organized labor cannot co-exist. I find this to be a completely false argument, especially in light of how our Republican President is going after other countries for unfair labor practices that keep our workers and industries at a disadvantage.

I am excited about the new Workforce Development Programs at Richland Community College. Our country’s labor force is going through a remarkable time that we haven’t seen in decades. Specifically, we have low unemployment and a high demand for skilled people to fill good-paying jobs. We owe it to the young adults entering the workforce to give them every opportunity to receive top-notch training and join the workforce.
